Introduction to Slovenian Language


Slovenian (also called Slovene) belongs to the Western subgroup of the South Slavic branch of Slavic languages. Like all Slavic languages, Slovenian has its roots in Proto-Slavic, the ancestral language from which all Slavic languages had evolved. The earliest known examples of a written Slovenian dialect in the Latin script date back to about 1090 AD. They are among the oldest surviving documents in any Slavic language.

According to Ethnologue, Slovenian is spoken by 1.8 million people in the Republic of Slovenia. It is also spoken in Italy, Austria, Serbia, Croatia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. It is estimated that over 2 million people speak Slovenian worldwide.

Slovenian is the official language of the Republic of Slovenia. Most Slovenian speakers also speak Serbian and Croatian. Slovenian is used in all public, social, and private communication. Numerous newspapers, periodicals, and books are published in Slovenian.
